Rome, Italy day 2

Today we went to the Colosseum and many of the arches in Rome. At the Colosseum we got a guided tour that would let us skip the hour long line to get in. The Romans were so civilized that they had drinking fountains in the Colosseum on every floor and bathrooms on the top floor , but unfortunately all of those fountains and bathrooms are long gone now! When the Colosseum was first built, the Romans covered everything with marble. The floor, the ceiling, the walls, everything. When one of the popes commissioned for 90 churches to be built in rome, the builders tore marble off of the Colosseum and many other roman buildings to use on the churches.

The wooden floor in the Colosseum has rotted so that you can see under it. All of the stone things on the ground were ramps used to push animals through trap doors in the  floor. The concrete floor near the back of the photo is to show you what the floor would have been like.
